Whereas upon the accusation of Betsy Chessher of the said county, single woman, this day taken an oath before us James C. Luttrell and David Nelson two of the Justices of the Peace for the said county it appears that she has been delivered of a bastard male child more than 30 days ago and that said child is likely to become chargeable to the county (aford) aid and the said Betsy Chessher having accused Joshua Cottrell of the said county, labourer, with having begotten the said child.

These are therefore in the name of the state to command you to bring the said Joshua Cottrell before us or any two Justices of the Peace for the said county to enter into recognizance, enter sufficient surity to appear at the next Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions to be held for the said county at the courthouse in Knoxville on the first Monday in January onset then and there to answer the said accusation and to abide by and perform the orders of the said court touching the same and cause fail not given under our hands and seals this 3rd day of December, 1823.
