Thomas Cottrell's obituary was published in the Western Star on 30 April 1903:
; THOMAS C. CURTIS "An Honest Man Falls Asleep in Old Age"Thomas Cottrell Curtis, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Posey county, died at his home three miles northwest of Mount Vernon, Saturday morning, April 25. Funeral, Sunday the 26th, at Black's cemetery, Rev. Shake of the M.E. Church conducting the services at Black's M.E. Church. Many devoted relatives and friends were in attendance to pay their last sad tribute of respect.
Thomas Cottrell Curtis was born March 3rd, 1811, in the State of Tennessee, and was 92 years, 1 month and 22 days old at his death. He was a son of William Curtis and Edith Cottrell Curtis. William Curtis, his father, a son of Joshua Curtis and Sallie Clark Curtis and Edith Cottrell Curtis, his mother, a daughter of Thomas Cottrell and Jennie Brown Cottrell, were descended from English parentage, who settled in Virginia sometime during the seventeenth century.
The ancestors of deceased moved to North Carolina, and from there to Tennessee, about the year 1800; his father and mother came to Indiana in 1815, and settled on the land where deceased lived for 88 years. On November 2nd, 1848, he was married to Emily E. McDaniel, who preceded him in death 15 years. Five children were born to them: William Miles Curtis, deceased, Thomas W. Curtis and Mrs. James Brazel of this county, George Curtis, of Arizona, and Mrs. Anderson Nelson, of Illinois.
Deceased was a democrat in politics and cast his first vote for Andrew Jackson for President in 1832. He was honest in all his conviction, and retained his mental faculties and talked intelligently, until he fell asleep in old age. Deceased was a brother of the father of Geo. W. Curtis, ex-county clerk, who was born on the farm of Uncle Tommy, in 1815-the year they moved there from Tennessee, who died in 1891.2,11
